A upcoming American superhero movie called Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is based on the DC comic book character Aquaman. It is the follow-up to Aquaman (2018) and the fifteenth entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), produced by DC Studios, Atomic Monster, and The Safran Company. The film, directed by James Wan, is based on a narrative by Jason Momoa, Wan, Johnson-McGoldrick, and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett. Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the movie, with Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Originally proposed during the first film’s production, Wan agreed to supervise the sequel’s development. June 2021 marked the start of filming, which ran until January 2022. Additional filming was place in New Zealand. On December 22, 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in the US.

In Aquaman (2018), Dolph Lundgren makes a comeback as Nereus, the father of Mera and the ruler of Xebel. Dr. Stephen Shin, a marine researcher who is fixated on discovering Atlantis, is portrayed by Randall Park. Arthur’s father, Tom Curry, is portrayed by Temuera Morrison. Atlan is portrayed by Vincent Regan, Stingray by Jani Zhao, Karshon by Indya Moore, and an unidentified character by Pilou Asbaek.
Production of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
A sequel to Aquaman, which was conceived by James Wan and helmed by Toby Emmerich and Peter Safran, was suggested by Jason Momoa in 2018. Momoa received $15 million to play seven aquatic realms that had not yet been thoroughly explored in the movie. Warner Bros. and Wan were negotiating for Wan to supervise the writing and development of a sequel, with Wan perhaps returning as director. Wan was “deeply invested” in the worldbuilding of Aquaman and has previously been guarded about sequels to his prior flicks.
Warner Bros. recruited Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald in February 2019 to create the story for The Trench, an Aquaman spin-off movie that is based on one of the kingdoms that is presented in the first movie. The sequel was being produced by Wan and Safran, although it was not yet known if Wan would also serve as director. The Conjuring Universe was modelled around the Aquaman franchise, and Aquaman 2 was slated for release on December 16, 2022. It was revealed that Wan will be directing the follow-up, which would have more sombre themes and be more grounded in reality.
Release date of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
On December 22, 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in the US. The pandemic’s influence on visual effects suppliers forced a rescheduling of the intended December 16, 2022 release date. Later, the publication date was pushed back to December 25, 2023, and then to December 20 and 22, 2023.
Future of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Warner Bros. contemplated recasting Momoa as Lobo and terminating the Aquaman film series in December 2022. Momoa declared in January 2023 that while he could play other roles, he will always remain Aquaman. Momoa may return to the DC Universe, as hinted by co-CEOs of DC Studios Gunn and Safran, but no decision was made. None of the actors from Zack Snyder’s DCEU flicks would be back in September 2023.
